16-month-old child dies after being hit by car at family gathering, Texas police say

A toddler is dead after being hit by a car during a family gathering on Labor Day, Texas investigators told news outlets.

The child, 16-month-old Emma Shae Carter, was at her grandfather’s home in Upshur County, near 2100 Mule Deer Road — about half a mile west of U.S. Highway 271, KLTV reported.

Around 4:20 p.m., a family member got into their car to run an errand “related” to the get-together, the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office told KYTV. But as they were leaving,Emma “moved into the car’s path” and was hit, according to the local news station.

Emma was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead when she arrived, the Longview News Journal reported.

Investigators believe the girl’s death was an accident, outlets reported. The case is being turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.

Emma lived in Gilmer, a small town roughly 9 miles south of her grandfather’s house.
