‘This is Us’ fans say Mandy Moore was snubbed of Emmy nomination. ‘Completely unfair’
Actress Mandy Moore was not nominated for an Emmy award on Tuesday, July 12, despite months of campaigning by fans of “This Is Us” and stars of the NBC series.
Fans say Moore was snubbed of a nomination, which will be her last chance in her role as Rebecca Pearson. “This Is Us” concluded its fifth and final season in May.
The following actresses are up for the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Jodie Comer, “Killing Eve”; Laura Linney, “Ozark”; Melanie Lynskey, “Yellowjackets”; Sandra Oh, “Killing Eve”; Reese Witherspoon, “The Morning Show”; and Zendaya, “Euphoria.”
Missing was Moore, who played the matriarch of the Pearson family on “This Is Us” through different stages of her character’s adult life. Her character’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease was the most pivotal plot point of the season, and the actress was often lauded for her portrayal of the character.
“It’s completely unfair that Mandy Moore was snubbed for the best actress award,” one fan said. “Hers is unquestionably among the best performances we’ve seen.”
Moore’s character became the focal point of the show as the series concluded. The penultimate episode, “The Train,” highlighted loved ones saying goodbye to Rebecca Pearson at the end of her Alzheimer’s battle.
Sterling K. Brown, who played her adopted son Randall Pearson on the show, said in an Instagram video in April that Moore “deserves to be recognized.”
“Y’all know Mandy Moore is eight years younger than me — and she plays my mama,” Brown said. “And there’s never a moment on set — I don’t know what it’s like for you guys to watch — but there’s never a moment on set where I’m like, ‘Mandy Moore’s too young to play my mama.’ No. She is my mama. And the beautifully subtle, nuanced work and the portrayal of someone going through what her character’s going through, it’s just exquisite, man.”
“This Is Us” received one Emmy nomination — earning it in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category.
Show creator Dan Fogelman said the nominations “didn’t break for #ThisIsUs.”
“If you’re happy when they go your way, you’ve got to take it on the chin when they don’t,” he said. “That entire group wins a ‘Danny’ in my book.”
Moore replied by saying “no award can give or take away the legacy” of what the show meant to many of its cast and crew members.
In her Instagram Story, she commented that she wishes the show was recognized more in its final season.
And her fans agree. Many people sounded off on Twitter and appeared irritated that Moore did not receive a nomination.
“’This Is Us’ completely snubbed for its final season. Mandy Moore giving a career highlight performance portraying a mother in all ages and with Alzheimer’s and the Emmys decided to snub her again,” one person said on Twitter.
“I will not be a good sport about this,” another commenter said. “@TheMandyMoore delivered such a moving, nuanced portrayal of an aging woman disappearing into the fog of Alzheimer’s.”
“Mandy Moore did not nail her performance as an older woman dying from dementia, a middle-aged woman dealing with grief, a young woman adapting to new motherhood *AND* the undead spirit of a woman boarding a train to the... afterlife only to be SNUBBED in Lead Actress!” said one person on Twitter.
Moore received an Emmy nomination in 2019 and also received a nomination from the Golden Globes in 2017.
