Thousands of bees relocated from seating area at New York City restaurant, video shows

Thousands of bees were the topic of conversation in New York City this past weekend.

The New York Police Department’s bee unit, known as NYPD Bees on Twitter, was called to a Times Square restaurant on Sunday, June 26 when 2,000 bees settled near a seating area, according to a tweet from NYPD News.

The bees will “be relocated to an area where their pollinating skills will be put to good use,” the department said.

NYPD’s bee unit also responded to another bee call in late May, according to a tweet from NYPD News.

“There was quite the buzz late last night at 3 World Trade Center as 8,000 honeybees swarmed the side of the building,” the tweet said.

The bees were safely relocated to an apple orchard, according to police.

Bees usually have two reasons for swarming, according to the University of Nevada, Reno. They may feel the hive has become too crowded and look for a new home while also transporting the queen bee, or they could also swarm if their current environment is unfavorable to their survival.

“This can include a variety of conditions, such as food and/or water resources become depleted, disease or parasite infestations are too abundant, there is frequent disturbance by humans or animals, weather conditions become adverse, ventilation becomes poor, or problems arise with the queen bee,” the university said.

If you encounter a swarm, the best option, the university said, is to leave it be for a couple days. However, if that’s not an option, it’s best to contact a local beekeeper.
