John Stamos ‘disappointed’ Bob Saget was not included in Tony Awards’ In Memoriam
Bob Saget was known for his television roles, but many did not realize that the comic also enjoyed a career on Broadway.
When it came time for the In Memoriam segment at the Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12, however, Saget was noticeably left out.
His former “Full House” costar, John Stamos, caught wind of Saget’s exclusion before the awards show. He let the Tony Awards committee know how upset he was that Saget was not a part of the segment.
“Disappointed to hear that @BobSaget will be LEFT OUT of the In Memoriam segment at @TheTonyAwards,” Stamos tweeted Sunday afternoon. “Bob was brilliant in ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ & ‘Hand to God.’ Come on @BroadwayLeague and @TheWing! Do the right thing! Bob loved Broadway and I know the community loved him.”
Saget died on Jan. 9 in a Florida hotel room. A medical examiner said he had an “accidental blow to the head” likely from a fall, The Associated Press reported.
He made his Broadway debut in “The Drowsy Chaperone” in 2007, playing “the salty and sweet show-tune addict” lead character Man in Chair.
In 2015, he joined the cast of “Hand to God,” in which he played Pastor Greg.
“Playing Pastor Greg, a Lutheran minister who attempts to have good human values, is a full 180 from my stand-up persona, as well as from other parts I have played over the years,” Saget told Broadway World.
Though he was not included in the video segment that aired on television, Saget’s name appears on the Tony Awards full In Memoriam list on its website.
The Emmy Awards, in which Saget would most likely be remembered for his iconic role as Danny Tanner in “Full House” and “Fuller House” and as host of “American’s Funniest Home Videos,” have not taken place since Saget’s death. The award show is scheduled to take place Sept. 12.
Saget was also left out of the Academy Awards’ In Memoriam segment in March, but was included on the academy’s website.
