Several middle school students were taken to a hospital after they ate drug-laced edibles and fell ill, Pennsylvania officials said.

The students, who attend South Allegheny Middle School in a suburb of Pittsburgh, all “experienced severe sickness within minutes of each other” around 8:30 a.m. March 31, the school district announced.

First responders were called, and the school ordered students and staff to “shelter in place,” the district said.

It’s not clear what drug or drugs were present in the edibles, but shortly after EMTs arrived, they advised that the students be taken to a hospital for further treatment, the district said.

Six students were hospitalized, TV station WTAE reported.

“All affected students’ families have been contacted, and all middle school students’ bookbags and belongings have been rechecked for drug paraphernalia,” the district said.
