196-square-foot house lists for $1M in Florida. Is ‘every surface covered with gold’?
Tiny houses have been all the rage lately thanks to people wishing to downsize, the Tiny Life blog says. There are even what’s known as tiny house kits for those looking to build their own small space.
However, the cost of a tiny house is about $300 per square feet, which makes one, minus any high-end amenities, between $30,000-$60,000, according to Rocket Mortgage.
Which leads us to ask: Why is this 196-square-foot home in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, listed for a whopping $1.09 million?
In case you’re wondering, that’s $5,587 per square foot.
“Incredible opportunity to own one of 30A’s most unique properties with added development potential over quarter acre in the heart of Seagrove Beach!” the listing says. “Only steps away from the beach, the popular Seaside community, dining and more, this 1BR/1BA studio home has been impeccably finished and rests on over a quarter of an acre with space to add additional dwellings.”
According to the listing, it’s all about location, location, location when it comes to the high cost of the home. And the fact that it sits on a quarter of an acre, which means a new owner can add onto the home.
The house, which the listing says has “charming Southern-style finishes,” appears to have the essentials inside, such as a claw-foot bathtub and a cast-iron farmhouse sink. There’s also an outdoor shower and a stock tank splash pool in the backyard.
The tiny place managed to nab the attention of people on Zillow Gone Wild, who were flabbergasted by the cost.
“If I were a millionaire needing to punish myself, but not too harshly - this would be a hit!” one person joked.
“Not worth a million even if every surface was covered with gold,” another remarked. “Just think about spending that much money to own a little closet in Florida of all places.”
“It’s on a quarter acre—I am so confused as to why they built such a tiny house,” one person said. “It’s *adorable*, but it is something I’d expect to be nestled in an otherwise wasted small space, not something on a large-ish lot.”
“What crazy person gonna spend that much money for less than 200sqft of house?!” another person exclaimed. “Is it cute? Yes. But maybe for $200k? I dunno, I live in southern Ca and there are shacks for $300-400k+ but this is just ridiculous!”
“You pay for the beach and the luxury of telling friends and family there is ‘just no room for visitors!’” one person said. “You get what ya pay for!”
