Oil mogul’s grandson lists California home with private beach access at $109M. See it

A 4.21-acre oceanfront estate owned by the grandson of late Beverly Hills oil tycoon Arthur A. Cameron and Hollywood actress Kay Aldridge hit the market Wednesday for $109 million, making the Carpinteria, California residence one of the top 20 most expensive homes for sale in the world, according to Compass real estate firm.

The property is one of the last oceanfront horse ranch estates on the Southern California coast and the only one along the prestigious Padaro Lane bluffs to have private beach access, a Compass representative said. The compound sits directly above famous surfing beach Loon Point.

The seller, investor and avid polo player Arthur A. Cameron III, grew up between multiple family properties both in the Santa Barbara area and Palm Springs. He built the house, dubbed Rancho Cariñoso, at 2937 Padaro Lane in 2014. He retired his polo ponies at his 377-acre ranch 40 minutes north of Santa Barbara, but is known to bring them into town for horseback rides on the beach.

“Both my grandfather and father had the most keen eye for remarkable pieces of one-of-a-kind, truly exceptional real estate all over the world, none with quite the special kind of idyllic magic that this property holds,” Arthur A. Cameron III said in a statement. “It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime large piece of prime coastal land with unmatched offerings and capabilities on and off the serene Pacific Ocean, an unparalleled place to grow up and live within.”

A long driveway through new landscaping and mature trees leads to a three-bedroom, four-bath home that spans 2,500 square feet. The single-level home’s facade features freshly stained horizontal wood accents and large windows that allow light to pour into the interior. There’s also a 1,000-square-foot detached garage

The lot has multiple building sites, allowing expansion of the existing structures and for zoning for nine horse stables. A private horse trail leads directly to the beach, where horse riding and bonfires are allowed without the time constraints of other Southern California coastal spots.

“This property is perfect for yacht owners (you can park right in front) and fishing with world-class lobster diving directly in front of the property,” a Compass news release added.

A flat area below the main house is an “ideal location for a state-of-the-art pool and pool house,” according to the official property listing.

“This world-class legacy property is unlike any other beachfront estate on the market today,” lead listing agent Sean Matthews of Compass said. “It is truly an equestrian enthusiast’s dream. Private horse trails lead to a private beach where horses can be ridden at any time of the day, an exclusive feature for this specific property given it’s unique positioning on the bluffs. The property has been utilized as a beach retreat/ocean oasis as the owner is an avid waterman. The backyard area offers its own surf break and direct access to world class lobster diving, fishing, and endless water sport/water craft options. Yacht owners can conveniently dock their yacht directly in front of the homesite. Its expansive size also boasts private nature hiking trails throughout and access for ATV driving across its expansive grounds. This is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of California’s iconic coastline and make it your own.”

Eric Haskell of The Agency is a co-listing agent for the property.

Based on Compass data, there were 54 sales above $10 million in the Santa Barbara region in 2021, a 157% change over the previous year. Those ultra-luxury homes accounted for $911 million in sales volume, a 123.5% change year over year.

Rancho Cariñoso is next to a property owned by actor Kevin Costner, who had listed the 10-acre parcel for $60 million in 2017, according to the Wall Street Journal.
