Problems with rearview cameras, brakes and axles caused Ford to announce a recall of 748,747 cars, trucks and SUVs in the United States, Canada and Mexico on Wednesday.

Problems in reverse

The issue, as described by Ford: These cars “have insufficient electrical conductivity within the printed circuit board internal to the camera. A rearview camera that intermittently displays a blank or distorted image would not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards ...”

Number of vehicles involved: 701,114.

Recall reference number: 20C19.

Models involved: Look carefully and check your ownership paperwork.

Ford Mustang vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant from Nov. 18, 2019, to May 26, 2020.

Ford Escape vehicles built at Louisville Assembly Plant from Nov. 5, 2019, to May 18, 2020.

What you should do: Don’t rely on the camera when in reverse. Then, take your vehicle to a Ford dealer so the service department can replace the rearview camera. Ford will notify dealers and owners on Nov. 7.

Breaking Brakes

The issue, as described by Ford: These cars have “a brake pedal bracket that could fracture during sudden stopping. During a sudden stop, the driver may experience a loss of primary braking capability that could increase the risk of an accident.”

Number of vehicles involved: 40,578.

Recall reference number: 20S52

Models involved: 2020 Mustangs put together at Flat Rock Assembly Plant from March 4, 2019, to Aug. 13, 2020.

What you should do: Get the car to a dealer to replace the brake assembly.

Axle welding

The issue, as described by Ford: These trucks “are equipped with front axles that may contain a wheel end yoke that was not properly welded to the axle tube end. An improperly welded attachment may cause steering effects that could impact vehicle control.”

Number of vehicles involved: 10,589.

Recall reference number: 20S56

Models involved: 2019 F-250 and F-350 put together Kentucky Truck Plant from Aug. 24 to Oct. 16, 2019.
