Raging floodwaters blow doors off hinges in Massachusetts hospital, video shows

New security footage reveals the moment floodwaters began creeping into a Massachusetts hospital basement — and then busted the emergency exit doors wide open.

A series of thunderstorms that brushed over Norwood Hospital, located southwest of Boston, brought nearly six inches of rain in just a few hours on that June 28 afternoon, according to CBS Boston. The flooding caused so much damage that the hospital has been closed ever since.

The video shows how the powerful surge of water knocked the emergency exit doors off their hinges, eventually lifting chairs and large boxes off the ground and through the hospital like a not-so-lazy river.

More than four feet of water made its way inside, temporarily trapping two people and leading to the evacuation of more than 100 patients, CBS Boston reported.

A hospital spokesman said water entered from “all six sides, including through the roof and up from the floor,” according to Storyful.

A complete reconstruction might be needed.

“Based on the extent of the flooding, we need to check every piece of equipment, every outlet, every inch of drywall for damage in order to be 100% sure that there is no risk to our patients now or in the future,” the hospital spokesman said.
