Target announces new Thanksgiving plan so guests can ‘celebrate the holidays safely’
Target stores will be closed to guests on Thanksgiving Day, the company announced Monday.
In a statement, the retailer said its decision was part of an effort to make the “holiday shopping experience simple, safe and stress-free” for its employees and guests amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“The investments we’ve made in our business and our incredible team have enabled us to move with flexibility and speed to meet guests’ changing needs during this global pandemic,” Target CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement. “This year more than ever, a joyful holiday will be inseparable from a safe one, and we’re continuing to adjust our plans to deliver ease, value and the joy of the season in a way that only Target can.”
So what about those Black Friday deals customers clamor for every year? No worries. Target said guests will still be able to enjoy deep discounts on their favorite products, especially if they’re enrolled in Target Circle, the retailer’s loyalty program.
“This season, you can count on getting extra-big savings without the extra-long lines, with plenty of opportunities to score the best deals on the hottest items both before and after November 26,” the company said in the statement. “So kick back, relax and enjoy a long nap after you finish that last piece of Thanksgiving turkey.”
Among other changes coming this holiday season, the store said it’s making 20,000 additional products including “fresh and frozen grocery items available via” its store pickup and DriveUp services this fall, according to the release.
Special holiday deals and pricing will also come earlier this year, beginning in October.
Target is the latest retailer to announce its plans to close on Thanksgiving Day. Last week, Walmart said it would also close its doors to guests on Nov. 26, McClatchy News reported.
