No more last-minute pie shopping: Walmart to close stores on Thanksgiving Day

Be sure to get all of your Thanksgiving grocery shopping done ahead of time, because Walmart announced Tuesday that it will close all of its stores for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26.

Sam’s Club, which typically closes for the holiday, will be closed that Thursday as well, the company said in a news release.

“We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones,” John Furner, Walmart U.S. president, said. “We are certainly thankful to our people for all of their efforts.”

Walmart and Sam’s Club stores will operate their normal hours on Nov. 25. The retailer will share more information about its Nov. 27 — Black Friday — hours in the future.

In addition to the Thanksgiving closures, Walmart said it will pay cash bonuses to Walmart, Sam’s Club, distribution and fulfillment center workers to thank them for their service during the coronavirus pandemic.

Full-time hourly workers as of July 31 will receive a $300 bonus, while part-time and temporary workers will receive $150, the company said.

Managers, assistant managers and drivers will also receive bonuses, according to Walmart.

“Our associates have been working at an incredible pace, they’ve solved problems, and they’ve set an amazing example for others,” Furner said.
