Gas hit 75 cents at a Wisconsin fuel station. When’s the last time US saw that price?
A gas station in Wisconsin is selling gas for 75 cents per gallon — the lowest price in the U.S., an industry analyst says.
The Shell gas station in Francis Creek, a small town south of Green Bay, was selling fuel for the incredibly cheap price on Friday, according to Gas Buddy. Just across the street, a Citgo was selling gas for 80 cents.
Patrick De Haan, an analyst at Gas Buddy, tweeted a photo of the gas station’s sign advertising the price.
“It’s extremely rare in modern days,” De Haan told McClatchy News. “We saw a Michigan station selling for 47 cents per gallon in 2016 due to a price war, and the same may be happening here, but aside from that, we have not seen a price this low in decades.”
On Monday, oil prices plunged below zero for the first time ever as demand dropped off during the coronavirus pandemic as producers seek buyers to store the glut of crude in facilities, McClatchy reported.
The national average for gas prices had dropped for 59 days straight to $1.78 per gallon on Monday, according to Gas Buddy.
The last time Americans saw an average gas price below 75 cents was 1978, when the national average was 63 cents, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Of course, that price isn’t adjusted for inflation, which would mean the same price would be about $1.83 today.
On Twitter, people reacted to the low price.
