Justin Bieber better than Elvis? He just broke the King’s long-standing record
Is there a new king?
Justin Bieber has surpassed Elvis Presley as the youngest solo artist to land seven No. 1 albums on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
His latest album, “Changes,” was released Feb. 14 and sold 231,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard. The chart’s metrics take into account album sales and streams.
Bieber, 25, said on Twitter that he is “grateful” for his No. 1 album — and for beating out Elvis.
Elvis was 26 years and 11 months in 1961 when “Blue Hawaii” became his seventh album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart, the website reported. He went on to have 10 No. 1 albums, including the posthumous “ELV1S 30 #1 Hits” in 2002, according to a biography.
The Beatles are the youngest act to achieve seven No. 1 albums, Billboard said. Ringo Starr, who was six months younger than Bieber is now, was the oldest member of the band when “Rubber Soul” topped the charts.
Bieber’s first album since 2015 received mixed reviews. Pitchfork said the album “has all the glow and eroticism of an airport terminal.” Rolling Stone, meanwhile, called it “sweet and tender, but ultimately shallow.”
He has a long way to go to catch The Beatles for the most No. 1 albums in a career. The Fab Four had 19 albums at No. 1.
Rapper Jay-Z has the most No. 1 albums as a solo act with 14, according to Billboard.
