No, Bill Gates didn’t buy the first-ever hydrogen-powered ‘superyacht’ for $644 million
Despite reports over the weekend, Bill Gates isn’t buying a $644 million hydrogen-powered superyacht.
News outlets, including The Guardian and Engadget, reported that Gates commissioned the yacht from Dutch company Sinot. Aqua, which was revealed at last year’s Monaco yacht show, is the first yacht powered by liquid hydrogen.
The 370-foot boat has a gym, space for 31 crew and 14 guests, and five decks, according to Engadget.
Sinot has disputed the reports that Gates bought the yacht.
“In recent days, various articles have appeared in international media, stating that Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design sold its concept ‘Aqua’ (presented at Monaco Yacht Show 2019) to Mr. Bill Gates,” the company wrote on its website. “These articles are factually incorrect.”
“The Hydrogen concept Aqua is not linked to Mr. Gates (or his representatives) in any form or matter,” it continued. “Sinot has no business relationship with Mr. Gates. Aqua is a concept under development and has not been sold to Mr. Gates.”
The Microsoft co-founder has invested in eco-friendly tech in the past. Heliogen, a clean energy company backed by Gates, said it found a way to use artificial intelligence to reflect sunlight and generate heat, according to CNN.
