What’s a ‘Snow Moon’? It’s lighting up the night sky for three days this weekend
One of the biggest full moons of 2020 will light up the night sky this weekend.
The Snow Moon will appear for three days — from Friday night to Monday morning, according to NASA. The moon will be full by Sunday at 2:33 a.m. EST.
“For the best view of this Moon, look for it on the night of Saturday, February 8; it will rise in the east and reach its highest point in the sky around midnight,” the Old Farmer’s Almanac says.
Native American tribes called February’s full moon the “Snow Moon” due to “the heavy snows that fall in this season,” according to NASA.
Even though it’s one of the biggest moons, experts disagree on whether this weekend’s Snow Moon is categorized as a supermoon, Fox News reported.
Astronomer Fred Espenak dubbed this weekend’s full moon as a supermoon in his post, Full Moon at Perigee.
NASA lists 2020’s supermoons as taking place in March and April, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.
