Couldn’t get tickets to ‘Hamilton’? Disney is bringing the original cast to theaters

Disney won’t throw away its shot to bring hit Broadway show “Hamilton” to the big screen, the company announced Monday.

The new film will include the original Broadway cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Disney said. “Hamilton” won 11 Tony Awards and also took home a Grammy award and a Pulitzer Prize.

Miranda, who created “Hamilton,” will also be a producer of the new film, which is slated for an Oct. 15, 2021, release.

“Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that ‘Hamilton’ was hailed as an astonishing work of art,” Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said in a news release. “All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share the same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

Fellow Tony Award winners Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Leslie Odom Jr. will also reprise their roles. The movie was filmed by director Thomas Kail before the original cast members began to depart, according to Variety.

Disney paid $75 million for the worldwide rights to the film, according to Deadline. The 2 hour, 40 minute film will have a global theatrical release.

The new film “is a leap forward in the art of live capture,” Disney said.

“This movie transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way,” Disney stated. “Combining the best elements of live theater and film, the result is a cinematic stage performance that is a wholly new way to experience ‘Hamilton.’”

The musical is based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States, and incorporates hip-hop and R&B into its soundtrack. The show debuted on Broadway in August 2015, and as it began touring throughout the country, tickets became a sought-after commodity.

Miranda teased about the upcoming movie at last month’s Sundance Film Festival, Variety reported.

“What I’m most excited about (is) you all have that friend that is like, ‘I saw it with the original cast.’ We’re stealing that brag from everyone because you’re all going to see it with the original cast,” Miranda said, Variety reported. “We’re just trying to find the right time to do it.”
