‘Miracle.’ 5-year-old run over by school bus left with only bruises, NY video shows
A school bus drove over a 5-year-old — and left her virtually unhurt, New York officials say.
The “Chanukah miracle” came just after the girl started crossing a residential street in Monsey, according to an Instagram post from Yeshiva World News.
The area is located roughly 35 miles north of the Big Apple, according to WABC and other media outlets.
As she gets in front of the stopped school bus, it starts to pull off and retract its safety bar, knocking the girl onto the ground, the dramatic video from Wednesday shows.
“The bus driver was apparently unaware of the child’s presence and began to move forward,” the Ramapo Police Department said in a news release.
The girl was still on the pavement as the school bus drove overhead, the Yeshiva World footage shows.
“The undercarriage of the bus did make contact with the child; however, at no time did the child get run over by the tires,” the police news release said.
Officers say the girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for bruises.
The bus driver was issued a citation for unsafe starting, according to police. His school bus was from Congregation Beth Rochel, which didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News Friday morning.
