McDonald’s customers unknowingly paid for employee’s buying spree, Michigan cops say

Drive-thru customers at a McDonald’s in Michigan may have helped fund an employee’s shopping spree, officials say.

Police in Buena Vista are warning McDonald’s customers to check their credit and debit card transactions after they say an employee was caught snapping photos of the fronts and backs of customers’ credit cards when they paid for meals in the drive-thru, according to a news release.

Police say the employee would use the credit card information to shop online and make purchases over the phone.

While investigators say the incident was far from isolated, the employee was arrested and taken to Saginaw County Jail on felony charges.

The employee has been fired by McDonald’s and their identity has not been released, police say. The incident remains under investigation.

Police implored shoppers to be mindful of credit card safety and regularly check credit and debit card statements for abnormalities, especially during the holidays.

If your credit card information is compromised, personal finance website The Balance recommends the following course of action to keep your information safe:

  • Make note of all unauthorized charges;
  • Call your credit card issuer to cancel the card;
  • Monitor purchases on your new card.
