Meet up with Miami Herald journalists at one of my longtime favorite places: the library

Westchester Regional Library in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022.
Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald journalists will be at Westchester Regional Library, 9445 Coral Way, on Nov. 16 and 17 to connect with members of the community. swalsh@miamiherald.com

As a young girl I loved visiting the local library. The more books I could check out, the happier I was. For me the library was a safe place full of knowledge. I always thought librarians, next to teachers, were the smartest people alive.

For generations of children and adults, libraries have been a key part of what makes up a community. I still take my 10-year-old to the library. I’ve always loved them because they provide a bountiful desire for learning.

Although the daily work of librarians and journalists differs, we share many professional values. We each have a public service mission aimed at enriching lives locally and a shared belief in rigorous research. And, we are sources for credible and reliable information.

Next week, the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald will be intertwined with a local library to share some knowledge about our journalism and hear from citizens about what’s important to them in their community. It’s an idea that we and other McClatchy newsrooms began thinking about in post-pandemic times. It grew from a desire to have even greater connections with our communities. We are calling it our pop-up mobile newsroom.

Our first stop will be the Westchester Regional Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17. Reporters and editors will be there to talk about their roles as journalists in the community. We will also be there to listen. It’s not just about what our reporters may need for a story, or what journalists think they need from our communities — it’s about what communities need and deserve from our journalists.

I can’t think of a better way to connect with communities than to be physically present in some of the places that are important to them. I hope you’ll meet us there. Our reporters and editors are excited to meet you. You might recognize some of them who cover important issues such as local government, education and other key topics.

If this location doesn’t work for you, don’t worry — we may try other locations in 2023. If you want us to visit your local library or another community location, please share. I’d like to hear from you.

In the meantime, there are many other ways to connect with us and we have a lot of great content plans coming up.
