New Surfside condo collapse podcast documents the rise and fall of Champlain Towers South

Dear reader,

It’s hard to believe that in just a few months it will be a year since the collapse of the beachfront condominium Champlain Towers South.

As with other tragedies we remember and still feel the pain that this event caused for so many families and for our community. But we also remember the sense of community that came from the devastation.

In times of crisis, we come together. Moments like this show the power of community. While we may not always agree or even get along with our neighbors, communities will come together to provide support and encouragement in the darkest moments.

It’s human instinct. The days, weeks and months after the collapse motivated us all to channel positive energy in the right direction to help those in need.

As part of our public service mission, the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald thought it was important to document June 24 and the days following in a way that respectfully memorializes the lives lost. We also want to be vigilant in our reporting so that this doesn’t occur again.

The Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald are part of this community. We are still covering this story to bring the latest news through words, pictures and video. Since that day, our journalists have been digging as questions still loom about how something like this could have happened. Since that day, we have remained committed to finding the answers.

This week, the Miami Herald and Treefort Media launched a new 12-part investigative podcast that looks into the rise and fall of Champlain Towers South.

I hope that you will download the weekly podcast and experience our quality, relevant journalism. We believe a platform for sharing local news is critical to our community and that it makes a difference. The podcast introduces you to some of the Miami Herald reporters, editors and visual journalists who have covered this story from the day of the collapse. The podcast also harnesses the expertise of Miami Herald investigative and data reporters who are still working the story.

You’ll also hear from the families who experienced tragic loss and from the first responders who witnessed and endured the unimaginable. As you listen to the podcast, I hope you’ll be reminded of the power of local journalism when it comes to breaking news, impact and accountability. I also hope you’ll be reminded of the strength from a community that cares and the difference we can all make when we live by the words “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

Thank you in advance for listening to the “Collapse: Disaster in Surfside” podcast and please let us know what you think.
