Over two dozen Cubans arrive in separate Florida Keys migrant landings Sunday morning
More than two dozen Cubans fleeing deteriorating economic, safety and political conditions arrived at the shores of the Florida Keys early Sunday morning in separate migrant landings, according to authorities.
At 1 a.m., six Cuban men on a fishing boat identified as “La Plata” landed at Sombrero Beach in Marathon, Adam Hoffner, division chief of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Miami operations, said Sunday in an email.
Hours later, at 6 a.m., 22 Cubans on a homemade vessel arrived at Curry Hammock State Park near Marathon, he said. Among them were 10 men, six women and six accompanied juveniles.

No injuries were reported.
All detained Cubans will be interviewed, processed for removal and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Hoffner added.

These arrivals are part of the biggest wave of Cuban migrants arriving in U.S. since 1980.
Customs and Border Protection tallies the number of migrants detained by fiscal year, which begins in October and ends in September of the next year. From October to April, 909 Cubans were detained on land in South Florida, more than doubling the last fiscal year when 413 were detained.
