Immigration agent at Miami International Airport tests positive for COVID-19
An immigration agent at Miami International Airport tested positive for the coronavirus, two federal Customs and Border Protection sources confirmed to the Miami Herald.
CBP notified the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department about the positive COVID-19 case on Monday, according to Miami International Airport officials.
It is unclear when the agent began having symptoms but the person has not to returned to work since getting tested late last week. Airport officials said the officer’s work areas in concourses D, F and J have since been deep cleaned.
The federal agency declined to comment on whether or not anybody who has had contact with the agent has been told to self-quarantine, noting that it is not sharing information or data on any reported cases.
“CBP’s highest priority is to ensure the health, safety, and security of the American people and our workforce,” a CBP spokesperson told the Herald in an emailed statement. “CBP has issued guidance to all our employees that outlines the current comprehensive use of personal protective equipment. We are taking every precaution to keep our workforce safe.”
CBP says it has provided protective gear for workers but would not specify what items — whether gloves, masks or goggles.
Two federal sources with knowledge of the case said the agency has informed colleagues who had been in contact with the infected agent, but that travelers who may have had contact with the person have not been notified.
Travelers arriving in the United States must pass through U.S. Customs on the way out of the airport. They check passports, green cards, and other forms of identification.
