Musical coming to Miami Beach Bandshell has a goal: Inspire you to fight climate change
Climate change might not be the first thing that comes to mind to break out into song and dance about — but it’s the theme of a a new youth-led musical called Dear Everything. The show hits the stage on Sunday at the Miami Beach Bandshell, with the aim of inspiring action through music and storytelling.
Dear Everything is described by its creators as a “narrated concert.” It centers on a struggling farmer and her daughter, who is consumed by fears of climate change. The daughter finds peace in a beloved town-owned forest – that is, until a corporation threatens to buy and destroy it.
“It’s really a conflict between adults who are living with the survival of now and people who understand that we have to be thinking about the future,” said Tony-award winning playwright V, formerly known as Eve Ensler, who is best known for her play The Vagina Monologues.
The show is produced by V-Day, a global activist group that aspires to use art to help end violence against women and the Earth.
“I’ve always been very passionate about the way that art can change hearts and minds,” said Maya Penn, a board member of V-Day, which is putting on the play at several stops around the country.
The cast is largely made up of performers between 17 to 25 years old, along with some of their parents. Sunday’s performance will feature a special appearance by the Miami Children’s Chorus.
Produced in collaboration with Harvard University’s American Repertory Theater, the show also brings serious musical talent to the stage. The songwriting team includes contributors who have worked with artists like Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Vance Joy. Even Broadway star Idina Menzel is a listed collaborator – the same voice behind Wicked’s Defying Gravity and Frozen’s Let It Go.
One number features the choir expressing outrage at humanity’s treatment of the planet. In a song directed at adults, they sing: “We want you to panic, we want you to act. You stole our future and we want it back.”
“I think we all want this play to awaken people to the mother, to the Earth, so that we become a force that fights for her,” V said.
Dear Everything will tour cities like Atlanta, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. The plan is that after the tour, the script will be made available for high schools and local community theaters to produce, bringing the message home.
