Miami Dade College will now have its own holiday.

“I AM MDC DAY” — a virtual event aimed at celebrating the school’s rich history and lasting impact — will take place on Sept 6.

Launched by the college, the 24-hour event will start a new tradition, encouraging the Miami Dade College community to post all things MDC on social media.

To be a part of it, college officials ask that anyone with an MDC connection post stories, tweet, and share images and videos about what I AM MDC means to them using the hashtag #iammdc.

The celebration is aimed at highlighting the achievements of MDC alumni, students, staff, and faculty, as well as inspire pride; and increase awareness of the college.

“I AM MDC DAY celebrates the tremendous impact of our nation’s largest institution. Not merely a milestone for our more than two million alumni, I AM MDC Day is a celebration for our entire community. Here in South Florida we are all MDC,” said Mark Cole, vice president of Advancement and executive director of the Miami Dade College Foundation.

I AM MDC DAY will be held every year on Sept. 6 in honor of the institution’s first day of school in 1960.

Enrollment then? 1,428 students. Enrollment today? More than 165,000 students.
