Two students arrested after principal finds gun at Miami high school

Miami Police arrested two high school students Thursday after a principal found a loaded gun in a teenager’s purse.

Police said a 16-year-old boy brought a gun to Green Springs High School at 3555 Northwest 7th Street and gave it to his 19-year-old friend, who put it in her purse.

The school received an anonymous tip Thursday morning about a girl with a gun.

The principal checked the girl’s purse, found a loaded gun and called police.

The 19-year-old student was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a stolen weapon and bringing a weapon on school grounds.

Student William Mercado told Miami Herald news partner CBS-4 he was surprised about the discovery of a gun on campus, but it did not make him nervous.

“We have metal detectors. They make you empty your pockets, and you have to keep walking through it until you don’t beep,” Mercado said.
