Sebastian Calvo of MAST Academy in Key Biscayne was selected to attend the Student Enhancement in Earth and Space Science summer internship at the University of Texas’ Center for Space Research.

The program is a partnership between Texas Space Grant Consortium, NASA, and the University of Texas at Austin. Internships are based on NASA’s engineering and scientific research programs, and aims to improve the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and math through space education.

Sebastian worked with scientists and engineers to conduct research on data from NASA’s satellites.

HAMMOCKS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Wendy Lee Schwartz retired from Hammocks Middle School on May 31 after teaching dance for 30 years in room 602 — 35 years in total.

Room 602 was originally an electronics room, but Schwartz transformed it into a large dance studio: adding ballet barres, mirrors, a wooden dance floor, locker room, costume rooms and a dance office. She also raised money for her students to compete in state and national championships, and to see Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater, Miami City Ballet, Mexican ballet and Cirque du Soleil.

The school will host a dedication of the room to Schwartz at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the school, 9889 Hammocks Blvd., in Miami. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Miami-Dade County School Board members, and a host of principals will be in attendance.

SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED STUDIES

Camille Molas, a rising senior at the School for Advanced Studies, was recognized by the campus presidents of Miami Dade College for her volunteer work with mentally and physically disabled children. Her goal is that children with special needs not be viewed as people with limited expectations.

Camille was presented with the Presidential Gold Pin, President’s Volunteer Gold Service Award, and a letter from President Barack Obama thanking her for helping to address needs in her community.

CAR WASH AND RIDE EVENT

Miami-Dade County and Homestead-Miami Speedway’s recently partnered with Special Olympics Florida to host a Car Wash and Ride charity event to support the outreach program Driving for a Cause, which awards grants to organizations that focus on youth and education problems in South Florida.

This past Sunday, participants throughout South Florida came out and drove their cars around the same 1.5-mile oval that NASCAR champions use each November.

Participants also donated to Farm Share, a local food bank; and Gotsneakers, a local organization that recycles sneakers.
