Howard Drive students host annual toy drive at Homestead homeless center
Howard Drive Elementary School students hosted their 16th annual Christmas Toy Drive for the children of the Homeless Assistance Center in Homestead.
Children placed presents beneath the school’s Giving Tree and ornaments on the tree for each gift donated to their cause.
Sponsors Laura Rossano, Arlene Young and Suanne Moses, along with the student council, contributed to the drive. This year, more than 100 gifts were donated to children in need.
THE SABORIDO FOUNDATION
The Saborido Foundation, in partnership with the Miami-Dade Police Department, recently held its annual Christmas Toy Drive. This year, about 600 toys were collected for underprivileged children of the Missionaries of Charity in Miami and Haiti.
Local police departments and W.R. Middle School students of Sara Saborido, president and CEO of the foundation, contributed to the toy drive.
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS HIGH SCHOOL
Five members were inducted into Christopher Columbus High School’s Hall of Fame during a special ceremony in the cafeteria. The inductees were selected based on achievements and dedication to the school.
Inductees included Teresa Chomat, chemistry and math instructor; Marcus Lemonis, 1991 alumnus, host of CNBC’s The Profit, chairman and CEO of Camping World; Angelo Palmieiri, school administrator and teacher, and former schools superintendent for the Archdiocese of Miami; Ray Rodriguez, 1969 alumnus and former president of Univision Communications; and Robert Sanchez, 1983 alumnus and chairman and CEO of Ryder System.
YOUNG MEN’S PREPARATORY ACADEMY
Edgar Otero, senior of the Young Men’s Preparatory Academy, was a recipient of the POSSE Scholarship Award and will attend Hamilton College with a full-ride scholarship.
Edgar was just one of 1,400 nominees and one out of 60 winners in Miami-Dade County. He plans to study English with hopes of becoming an instructor.
