School Scene: Students win ‘Heart Award’ for kind acts

Select students from Fulford Elementary School, Treasure Island Elementary School, Fienberg-Fisher K-8 Center and Biscayne Elementary School were recognized as Jennifer Beth Turken Heart Award winners.

Students were chosen for showing kindness toward their peers and being a role model in their community. The award is in honor of Jennifer Turken, a former North Beach Elementary School student who suffered from a severe brain tumor. Each winner receives a certificate and enjoys an ice cream party at their respective school.

RIVIERA PREPARATORY SCHOOL

The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) students at Riviera Preparatory School raised awareness for prostate cancer by participating in Baptist Health’s 5K ZooRun.

The students’ effort coincided with the school’s Movember 2015 Campaign, which raises awareness about men’s health. The students carried a banner to the 5K ZooRun that read, “Riviera Runs 2 End Prostate Cancer.’’

DOWNTOWN DORAL CHARTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students, faculty and staff of Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School celebrated the school’s education program and inaugural class of students with a dedication ceremony. Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools Alberto Carvalho, Doral officials and members of the community attended the ceremony.

The school is known for its dual language program that offers classes in English and Spanish or Portuguese. During the ceremony, school administration announced that more than 620 applications were received for the 2016-17 school year.
