It may seem like the school year just ended, but in a little over a month, it will start again.

If you need school supplies, have questions about after school programs, or are just looking for a fun outing for your kids, look no further than the Family Expo.

For the last 16 years, The Children’s Trust has hosted Family Expo events every summer. The Expos are more than just lively family events — they also provide access to community resources.

“Our goal is to empower parents and caregivers with the tools and information they need to ensure their children are well-prepared for the upcoming school year,” said James R. Haj, president of The Children’s Trust.

What is the Family Expo?

The Family Expos are one of the “largest, free, family resources events” in Miami-Dade County, according to the Children’s Trust. In 2023, the Expos were visited by “over 10,700 children and families,” according to the Trust’s annual report.

The Expos are “designed to directly support families in Miami-Dade County by bringing a wealth of resources right to their neighborhoods,” Haj said. These resources include information about after school programs, children’s vaccinations and back-to-school supplies.

Family Expos also boast indoor and outdoor activities for kids and families, including live music, face-painting and balloon artists.

When is the Family Expo?

This year, the Expos are scheduled right before school starts, and families will have two chances to get in on the action:

North: The first 2024 Expo will be held on Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. tol 2p.m., at Florida Memorial University, 15800 NW 42nd Ave.

South: The second Expo will be on Saturday, August 3, from 10am until 2pm, at Miami Dade College, Kendall campus, 11011 SW 104th St.

What is the Children’s Trust?

The Family Expos are hosted by The Children’s Trust, a community organization that works to “advocate for and fund strategic investments that improve the lives of all children and families in Miami-Dade County,” according to the Trust’s website.

The Children’s trust was established in 2002 by voter referendum and is funded by taxpayer dollars.

If you go to the Family Expo

Family Expos are free and open to the public, so anyone can attend.

In addition, the Children’s Trust is partnering with Uber to provide families with ride vouchers, good for up to $15 each way, to make it easier for families to attend the Expo.
