We know there are many unsung heroes connected to a school community.

The teachers, guidance counselors, mentors, bus drivers, crossing guards, parent volunteers, and cafeteria workers who make a big impact in the lives of students.

To honor these folks, we came up with an idea. Drum roll please ... it’s called “The Honor Roll Bracket.” Think March Madness, but not as basketball-y.

Here’s how it will work

We want you — current and former students, parents and all school staffers — to nominate someone who had an impact on you and your educational experience. Maybe it’s an elementary teacher who taught you an important lesson in first grade. Or a security or school crossing guard that makes your mornings feel special. Whoever it is in your community, we want to hear about them.

To nominate your person, just fill out the form below and tell us why you think they deserve to be named to The Honor Roll.

Once we receive the submissions, we’ll select nominees from our K-12 school community — in Miami-Dade and in Broward — to start off the bracket. Then, to make it fair, we want *you* to vote.

You’ll do that through a poll on our website, miamiherald.com, where you can vote for whomever you think should move to the next round. Look for the voting in mid-February.

As we get closer to the final stages, we will write stories or post videos about each nominee that is selected.

Then, we’ll conduct a final poll to pick this year’s winner.

A few things to know

For starters, our poll won’t be sticking to the scientific method (sorry, science teachers). We’re leaving things up to you, the readers, to showcase more of the talent and goodwill in our schools.

And perhaps more importantly, we recognize that every educator should be highlighted. Our intention is not to pick favorites or cause any negative feelings among those who may not be selected.

Instead, we hope this effort showcases individuals who are making a difference in their community, engages people with their school, and sparks a new and exciting model for how the Herald can continue offering dynamic, engaging and informative education stories.

Are you ready?! Go!
