Broward County joined the growing list of Florida school districts and colleges and universities that are closing their doors and canceling classes in preparation for Tropical Storm Nicole.

School will be closed Wednesday for students and faculty of Broward County Public Schools, the district announced on Tuesday afternoon. All classes, school-related activities and field trips have been canceled for the nation’s sixth-largest school district with more than 200,000 students.

Charter Schools USA, which has eight schools in Broward, also announced it will be closing on Wednesday.

Nicole will possibly become a Category 1 hurricane before it hits the state overnight Wednesday. However, most of the state’s east coast will start to feel tropical storm winds earlier in the day.

BCPS parents received a robocall from the district explaining that schools had to close their doors partly due to school buses not being able to travel when winds reach 35 mph or higher.

Broward Schools Superintendent Vickie Cartwright gave a similar reason for the closing in a video posted by the district on social media. She also urged everyone to keep safe.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools also announced it will close on Wednesday, also saying that its school buses are not allowed to travel when winds reach 35 mph.

The Archdiocese of Miami told parents that its schools will remain open on Wednesday and that it does not have the same issues, such as busing, that public school districts run into when inclement weather comes.
