Watch: A conversation with the new superintendents in Miami-Dade and Broward
Both Miami-Dade and Broward school districts welcomed new leaders this year: Jose Dotres, who was tapped in January to succeed former Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, and Vickie Cartwright, who after serving as interim superintendent for six months became Broward’s first female superintendent in February.
In their first few months on the job, they’ve seen changes to standardized testing after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law to eliminate FSA tests, repercussions from the Florida Legislature’s newly passed law impacting how teachers can discuss LGBTQ issues, an ever-widening achievement gap and mental health issues and learning losses brought on by the pandemic.
Join us as we catch up with Dotres and Cartwright to discuss how they plan to navigate these challenges and what they envision the future of South Florida schools will look like under a highly politicized environment.
