She got $1,000 and she’s off to Stanford, thanks to Miami women’s group scholarship
The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women recently held a socially distanced ceremony to honor Stara D’Haiti from the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy, who won the $1,000 Young Woman Achiever Scholarship.
Stara plans to attend Stanford University this fall to study environmental engineering.
The commission also awarded a $500 scholarship to four students from Women of Tomorrow’s mentorship and scholarship program to assist with their college expenses. The students include Yajaira Reyes from Miami Jackson High, Trisha Taluy from Biotech High, Nathalie Cruz from Miami Lakes Educational Center, and Yalin Valladares from Miami Springs High.
“For the sixth consecutive year, our board has been able to assist promising young women with a portion of their college expenses, and we have great confidence in the success of the ones selected this year,” said Sharon Kendrick-Johnson, chair of the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women. “They have proven their tenacity and focus on education, which is the best indicator of their future academic triumphs.”
Bookbag giveaway
Miami-Dade County Commission Chairwoman Audrey Edmonson recently hosted her 14th annual District 3 Back to School Bookbag Giveaway, which took place earlier this month.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, the giveaway was a drive-through at the Joseph Caleb Center. Motorists lined up and opened their trunks to receive backpacks filled with school supplies, along with Census 2020 coloring books and information from Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program. In total, more than 2,000 backpacks were distributed and donated to schools.
“We’re ensuring children are well supplied for school regardless of their parents’ financial circumstances,” Edmonson said. “Whether children are going face to face with their learning this year or virtual, they still need their supplies, and families still are in need of help because of COVID-19.”
Edmonson was joined by her staff and volunteers from various organizations, including Miami Power House Church, the Miami Children’s Initiative, and Antler Temple #39 of the Elks.
