Miami Beach High employee asked to stay home after exposed to coronavirus in Denver

An employee at Miami Beach Senior High has been asked to stay home after he was exposed to the COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, at a Denver hotel.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez-Diego confirmed that the employee recently stayed at the same hotel in Denver as another guest who has been diagnosed with the globally widespread virus, as first reported by WPLG Local 10 News.

She did not say what the employee did at the school or how long the employee had been at the school since returning from his trip.

State officials on Monday blundered a self-isolation mandate, at first saying all international travelers should self quarantine for 14 days. The corrected release said that guidance was actually “mandatory” but only applies to visitors of “Level 3” countries: Italy, China, South Korea and Iran.

Federal authorities have stated that the government has shifted its approach from containing the novel coronavirus to mitigating its impact, acknowledging the growing number of cases in the U.S.

By Sunday afternoon, there were more than 500 cases in 33 states, with 21 deaths.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
