A student came to school with a loaded Smith & Wesson, cops say. Here’s how it was handled

A school resource officer arrested a South Broward High School student Wednesday after finding a loaded gun in his backpack, Hollywood police said.

No code alerts or lockdowns followed after Hollywood police officer Henry Lumpkins heard from faculty member James Brown what he heard from a student: that another student might have a gun.

“In an effort to keep a calm atmosphere and not alarm the suspect, the School Resource Officer decided not to initiate a color code or put the school on lockdown,” Hollywood police said.

Instead, police say, Lumpkins found the student in Room 620, sitting near the back, with a black backpack next to him. Lumpkins brought out the student while Brown brought out the backpack.

Once inside the security office, Lumpkins found a blue pencil case inside the backpack. Inside the blue pencil case, he found a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 with six rounds in the magazine, but none in the chamber.

The student took his right to remain silent and was arrested on a charge of possession of a weapon on school property.
