13-year-old arrested after social media threat to shoot up Pines Middle School, cops say

An Instagram conversation led to the Monday morning arrest of a 13-year-old boy after what police felt was a threat of gun violence at Pines Middle School.

The teen’s name wasn’t released by Pembroke Pines police, who said the boy “admitted to sending the threat, but stated that it was intended as a joke.”

He has been charged with making a false report concerning the use of a weapon in a violent manner, a second-degree felony.

Pines police said one of the nine children in an Instagram group chat told police Sunday about a threatening statement made in the group chat.

“The threats stated that the student intended to shoot up Pines Middle School,” police said.

A Threat Assessment Team investigation ended at the student’s home. During “an extensive interview,” police say, he made the admission.
