The Parent Teacher Student Association at Coral Gables High School received a $16,000 donation from 1967 alumni for new television monitors and a digital scoring table for the school’s gym.
The alumni teamed up with school administrators to decide the best ways to use the funds. The members of the 1967 class will meet for their 50th anniversary on Jan. 28 at the school, 450 Bird Road, in Coral Gables. For information, call 305-878-8006.
Homestead Middle School
Ray Allen, a former Miami Heat basketball player who played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association, and his Ray of Hope Foundation recently donated a computer lab to Homestead Middle School.
Alberto Carvalho, superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, 150 students, Principal Contessa Bryant and faculty and staff members celebrated the donation with an assembly and ribbon-cutting. After the assembly, 26 students participated in an assignment using the new computer lab.
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School
Andres Dones, a senior at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, was selected by the National Catholic Educational Association to receive the 2018 Youth Virtues, Valor and Vision Award for his service, determination, innovation and ideas to change the world.
Andres was chosen from a pool of 1.9 million Catholic school students across the country. He will be presented with the NCEA Medal of Honor and a certificate on Monday during National Catholic Schools Week, which runs Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union
The South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union recently partnered with St. Thomas University, Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the National Academy Foundation to teach 300 freshmen and sophomores about balancing financial needs, wants and emergencies.
The two-hour session, called Mad City Money, is an interactive financial education reality fair that required students to create a budget for monthly expenses, manage debt, and save for the future while having a job, salary, family, student loans, credit card debts and medical insurance payments.
In addition to the financial literacy session, the university hosted an information session about admissions, financial aid and special programs to help with higher education costs.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Department of Early Childhood Programs has launched its Ready, Set, Enroll campaign, which features Florida’s Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten, Head Start, Inclusion, and the Reverse Mainstream programs for the 2018-19 school year.
