King Carter Global Trade and Logistics Academy
Miami Northwestern High School will now house the King Carter Global Trade and Logistics Academy, thanks to an anonymous $1-million donation that was made to pay homage to a 6-year-old boy’s life.
King Javon Carter, 6, was killed in 2016 during a drive-by shooting in Miami; and now he’ll be honored through the academy — which will focus on creating career readiness opportunities for students. The academy was unveiled last week by Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, MDCPS Board Members Martin Karp and Steve Gallon III, district staff, and parents Monica Carter and Santonio Carter.
Palmer Trinity School
Duncan Stoner, a senior at Palmer Trinity School, recently received an offer of appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He received a call from Rep. Carlos Curbelo last week with the news.
Duncan is president of his school’s Student Government Association, a captain of his school’s cross country team, and is a member of the student vestry.
“We are extremely proud of Duncan. He is a model student and natural leader who has demonstrated a deep concern for his community and his fellow students,” said Head of School Patrick Roberts.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Miami-Dade County Public Schools will observe Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on Feb. 2 instead of April 26, which is the national observance, to avoid disrupting mandatory testing for students.
