Twenty-two Ransom Everglades students named National Merit Semifinalists

Twenty-two students at Ransom Everglades School were named National Merit Semifinalists this month for their scores on the Preliminary SAT during their junior year. The students will submit applications to continue in the $2,500 scholarship competition, with hopes of becoming finalists in spring.

The semifinalists: Thorstein Andreassen, Lea Broudo, Eric Cai, Kavya Chaturvedi, Owen Dyke, Sylvia Ebenbach, Benjamin Freeman, Ryan Guillen, Anne Gutierrez, Matias Junghahn, Paul Kalandiak, Joon Young Kim, Adina Kruijssen, Delilah Lubarsky, John Mistele, Chloe Namias, Timothy O'Brien, Cristina Otero, Juliana Ramirez, Alejandro Sannia, Lauren Simkovic and Clara Simmons.

DORAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Doral Academy Preparatory School placed seventh overall in the National High School Math Convention in Missouri this summer. The school also placed first in Scrapbook and 10th in the Interschool test.

The school’s Theta team placed fifth in Bowl and sixth in Division, while the Alpha team placed 10th. The three Gemini teams earned fifth, 11th, and 12th places.

Participants included Tomas Alvarez, Douglas Shu, Karanveer Sandhu, Carlos Estrada, Jason Bravo, Elier Bermudez, Amanda Fernandez, Carolina Mora, Logan Fontirroche, Pedro Contipelli, Camille Wang, Crystal Zhang, Jesus Nunez, Liliet Sosa, Felilpe Contipelli, Carolina Mora, Vivek Brahmatewari, Mariam Cruz, Bradley Ramunas, Jacqueline Cruz, Liliana Sosa, and Giovanni Ferioli.

The team’s coaches included Jorge Acosta, Marisol Amoedo, Sam Koski and Libby Manning.

BELEN JESUIT PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Esteban Guio of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School was named a semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition, and plans to continue to compete for a finalist spot and $2,500 scholarship.

Esteban was recognized by Principal Jose Roca, Assistant Principal Ramon Nicosia and school President Jesuit Father Guillermo García-Tuñón.

TURKEY BOWL 2016

The football teams of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and Monsignor Edward Pace High will participate in the Turkey Bowl 2016 to donate turkeys to families in need during this year’s Thanksgiving.

Turkey Bowl is an annual charity event hosted by the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternity, and Coral Gables Council 3274, that aims to help less-fortunate families during Thanksgiving. The bowl will kick off at 4 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Monsignor Edward Pace High in Miami Gardens. The winners of the varsity football game will receive the traveling trophy, a silver turkey platter engraved with the helmet designs of both teams.

STUDENTCAM DOCUMENTARY CONTEST

C-SPAN has opened its national 2017 StudentCam Documentary Contest for all middle- and high-school students. The competition requires students to produce a short documentary, using C-SPAN programming, on what’s the most urgent issue for congress and the new president to address in 2017.

The cash prizes range between $250 for honorable mentions and $5,000 for the grand prize winner. High school students will be judged on a regional level and middle school students will be judged on a national level. The deadline is Jan. 20, and winners will be announced March.
