Miami jury orders deputy to pay $75,000 for beating cuffed woman

A Miami federal jury has ordered a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy to pay $75,000 to a woman who was beat up during her arrest after a traffic stop in Belle Glade.

The eight-person jury on Friday found that sheriff’s deputy Michael Woodside used excessive force against Maria Paul on Christmas Day 2008. Trial evidence showed Woodside punched her multiple times in the face and body while she was handcuffed in the back seat of his patrol car, according to her Miami attorney, Kenneth Swartz.

Paul also named Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw in her lawsuit. The trial lasted four days.
