When cops entered the small motel room they found almost two ounces of powdered and crack cocaine, a half ounce of pot, some Xanax pills and $428.
And asleep on the bed, within reaching distance of all those drugs and all alone — a 2-year-old boy.
“It was inside the bathroom and on the nightstand, in the bedroom and everywhere you went there were drugs,” Miami police Cmdr. Armando Aguilar told Miami Herald news partner CBS 4.
The strange and sad scene played out after a chase on a stolen scooter, a getaway and the accidental discovery of a mother who would be charged with endangering and neglecting her child.

“Just a terrible situation. To think that the child could have harmed himself with any of the cutting materials for drugs, that he could have ingested any of the narcotics, that he could have been seriously injured or killed,” Aguilar said.
In the end, Maidolys Oduardo-Paneque, 25, was arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect. And her suspected boyfriend Osniel Machado, 26, was still on the loose late Wednesday, having managed to elude police for a day and a half.
The circumstances that led to Oduardo-Paneque’s arrest began at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday when police chased Machado — who was riding what they believed was a stolen scooter — to the Motel San Juan near Southwest 24th Avenue and Ninth Street.
They lost him. But by then police said they had information that led them to the room where Oduardo-Paneque and her son were staying. They confronted her outside the room. She told the cops she hadn’t been inside the room in over an hour. They asked if they could enter.
She handed them the room key, according to police.
“We then made entry to the motel room and found a 2-year-old male baby sleeping in bed. In plain view next to the bed where the baby was sleeping I found suspect crack cocaine, powder cocaine and marijuana,” the arresting officer wrote in Oduardo-Paneque’s arrest affidavit.
The motel manager told CBS 4 that the couple and Oduardo-Paneques’s child have spent the past two months in the motel and pay $343 a week in rent. The child was turned over to the Department of Children and Families.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show Machado has been arrested for cocaine possession, grand theft, burglary and resisting arrest over the past three years. Police say he stole the motor scooter he was riding from Coral Gables.
