Teen pleads guilty to kidnap, rape of woman in South Miami-Dade

A teen who kidnapped a woman outside a South Miami-Dade Walgreens, then raped her at a nearby park, pleaded guilty Tuesday and will spend 20 years in prison.

Xavier Cobas was 17 at the time of the vicious attack in February 2014. He was caught by chance. The victim, while showing a Miami-Dade detective the crime scene one day after the attack, spotted Cobas hanging out on the street.

Cobas, now 18, must also complete 15 years of sex-offender probation after he leaves prison.

The woman, in her late 30s, had pulled into the Walgreens, at 28875 S. Dixie Hwy., to buy cold medicine. Surveillance footage showed Cobas crouching behind her car for five minutes, then attacking her from behind as she tried to get in.

Police said Cobas claimed he had a gun. He raped her at a park, then forced her to withdraw money from an ATM before letting her go.

The next day, she was inside a Miami-Dade police car showing a detective the route along where she was kidnapped when she spotted the teen. He later confessed, and was linked to the rape by DNA. Cobas also pleaded guilty to an unrelated burglary.
