A man who was found badly injured in a Wynwood alley and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, was identified by Miami police as Jose Pena late Saturday.

Police believe that Pena, 24, had been chased down by a car and are asking anyone who might have seen him Friday evening to contact investigators.

“Right now, to really put this puzzle together, we want to know if anyone out there knows this person’s whereabouts between 8 and 9 p.m. or just hours before,” said Officer Rene Pimentel. “We want to know if he was with someone or if anyone saw him.”

Authorities received a call about 8:40 p.m. Friday about a man being chased and possibly hit by a car in the 3400 block of Northwest Second Avenue. When police arrived at 3416 NW Third Ave., they found Pena unconscious in the alley.

Miami Fire Rescue took Pena to Jackson Memorial Hospital Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Earlier in the day, detectives said it was unclear how the trauma that led to his death occurred. They provided a picture of Pena, but Pimentel said at the time of Pena’s death, his hair was close-cropped.

Information can by submitted anonymously through Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
