Drug-deal debt ended in man being beaten to death at South Dade bus stop: MDSO

A fight over a drug-deal debt ended in a man being beaten to death at a South Miami-Dade bus stop, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

On June 2, James Thompson, 57, was arguing with a man over a “monetary debt from a previous narcotics’ transaction” at a market on Homestead Avenue, according to his arrest affidavit.

The man walked away, but Thompson followed and harassed him, deputies say. They eventually reached the bus stop at 173rd Street and Transit Way, where Thompson began to “repeatedly punch the victim in the face,” his arrest affidavit reads.

The man fell back, and Thompson continued to kick him, deputies say. As the man lay unconscious, Thompson began to search through his things, taking at least one item from his backpack before fleeing on foot, according to the report.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the man to Jackson South Medical Center, where he died just before 6 p.m. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide the next day. The victim’s name was not included in Thompson’s arrest report.

A few days later, Thompson was arrested on unrelated charges. On Thursday, he was taken to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau, where deputies say he confessed.

Miami-Dade County jail records show that, along with a second-degree murder charge, Thompson is charged with carrying a firearm as a convicted felon; cocaine possession with a firearm; manufacturing, selling, delivering or possessing cannabis with the intent to sell, while armed; resisting an officer without violence; grand theft auto; criminal mischief; and armed robbery.

He remained jailed at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center as of Friday afternoon. He is being represented by the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office.
