U.S. Marshals and deputies catch Miami-Dade shooting suspect in Georgia: MDSO
Deputies and U.S. Marshals in Georgia found a man who is wanted for a March shooting that critically injured a man in Miami-Dade County, the sheriff’s office said.
Nathan J. Cooper, 37, was arrested this week after a tip was received.
.Cooper shot a man on March 17 during a fight near Northwest Fifth Avenue and 83rd Street, police say. Cooper left the area, and deputies had been looking to arrest him on an attempted-murder charge ever since.
The man who was shot, Shawn Webster, is a Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department employee who had just returned from work when Cooper confronted him, Webster’s mother told WPLG-Local 10 at the time. The men were arguing about a conflict that their children were having, the mother told the TV station.
Webster was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami reported. His current condition was not immediately available.
Miami-Dade homicide detectives working with Marshals in a joint task force received a Crime Stoppers tip, and Marshals arrested Cooper in Norcross, Georgia, on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said Friday.
Cooper — who has multiple South Florida arrests, including 2007 convictions for felony fleeing and eluding police, grand theft auto and burglary — was on supervised release on a federal conviction at the time of the shooting. According to a federal indictment, Cooper was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in 2022.
A federal judge sentenced him to four years in prison, and he was released in September of last year, according to federal prison records.
“This arrest reflects the outstanding partnership between the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshals Service. When violent offenders attempt to evade justice, our agencies remain committed to working together across jurisdictions to locate and apprehend those responsible for endangering our community,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement.
Cooper was not listed as a Miami-Dade County inmate as of Friday.
