A child was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself with his mother’s gun in Southwest Miami-Dade County on Tuesday afternoon, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

Detectives investigating the case arrested the boy’s mother the next day.

The 6-year-old boy was first brought to Jackson South Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the collarbone and was then flown by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident happened on the 10100 block of Circle Plaza West near West Perrine.

Around 3:50 pm, the boy’s mother, Myeisha Sharie Smith, 33, was driving to Jackson South when she called 911 and said her child had been shot, Det. Argemis Colome, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said.

Detectives learned that Smith was inside the home when she heard the gunshot. She ran into one of the rooms and discovered her child had shot himself in the shoulder, Colome said.

After the mother rushed him to Jackson South, the boy was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Regional Hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition, Colome said. Investigators recovered the handgun and determined it belonged to Smith.

Deputies booked Smith into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center early Wednesday morning on one count of felony child neglect with great bodily harm.
