A child was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself with his mother’s gun in southwest Miami-Dade County on Tuesday afternoon, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

The 6-year-old boy was first brought to Jackson South Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the collarbone and was then flown by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident happened on the 10100 block of Circle Plaza West near West Perrine.

Around 3:50 pm, the boy’s mother was driving to Jackson South when she called 911 and said her child had been shot, Det. Argemis Colome, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said.

Detectives learned that the mother, whom the sheriff’s office has not identified, was inside the home when she heard the gunshot. She ran into one of the rooms and discovered her child had shot himself in the shoulder, Colome said.

After the mother rushed him to Jackson South, the boy was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Regional Hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition, Colome said. Investigators recovered the handgun, which is the mother’s, Colome said. Colome said it’s still unclear “what consequences she may face.”

Alessandria Smith said she has lived in the area for about a year and was shocked to hear that a child was shot.

“I felt like that was my little cousin,” Smith said, noting children commonly play in the streets in the neighborhood.
