Man accused of several burglaries in Coral Gables and Miami Beach: police
A man accused of carrying out burglaries in Coral Gables and Miami Beach was spotted at a 7-Eleven on Wednesday and arrested, police said.
Jason Orlando Reid’s spree seemingly started on Jan. 11 when he went into a woman’s Miami Beach backyard and walked toward her boat, according to a series of arrest affidavits. She was unsure if anything had been taken, but items were moved around.
That same day, Reid, 31, was spotted jumping a fence and trespassing on a Miami Beach construction site, an affidavit said.
Reid also tried to gain access to a Miami Beach home later that night through a back door, an affidavit said. There were three adults and two children sleeping inside. He damaged the door handle, opened two Amazon packages and tossed the contents on their lawn, the affidavit said.
The incidents started back up again a few months later in Coral Gables, police said. There were 20 reports from April 21-30 of residential burglaries, burglaries and thefts from the land surrounding homes, thefts from motor vehicles and suspicious-person incidents.
Reid is accused of trying to force open garage doors, attempting to get inside homes and cars and walking around people’s properties, the affidavits said.
Through the use of a crime-scene analysis unit and video capabilities, authorities identified Reid, the Coral Gables Police Department said in a statement.
While on patrol, two Coral Gables officers saw Reid walking into a 7-Eleven on Wednesday and recognized him from a “be on the lookout” alert, an affidavit said.
He was taken to the Coral Gables Police Department for questioning but refused to answer. He was being held Thursday at Miami-Dade’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, jail records show.
Reid is facing 10 charges, including burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, burglary of an occupied dwelling and criminal mischief of more than $200 but less than $1,000, jail records show. His attorney, Alexander Shear, didn’t respond Thursday to a request for comments.
Coral Gables police and other law-enforcement agencies are investigating Reid’s possible links to other similar crimes in Miami-Dade County, the department said.
