A Homestead teacher was arrested Monday for simple battery after he had a disagreement with a student, according to police.

Homestead police officers responded to First United Methodist Christian School at 622 N. Krome Ave., to investigate the incident, the department said in a statement.

“Upon arrival, officers met with the parents of a student who stated that their child’s mouth had been taped shut following a disagreement with a teacher,” the Homestead Police Department said.

The child’s gender and age was not provided by police. Michael Alvarez, who is listed on the school’s website as a middle school Bible teacher, was arrested and taken to Miami-Dade Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

He had since bonded out of jail, records show. No additional details about his case were immediately available Monday night.

Police are actively investigating the incident. A spokesperson for First United Methodist Christian School didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
