Miam-Dade sheriff releases footage of deputy shooting armed man trying to flee
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office released footage of a deputy shooting a North Miami Beach man, who is accused of fleeing from officers on Feb. 24 before pulling a gun on them.
That evening, a detective assigned to a robbery intervention detail tried to stop a black Mercedes-Benz at NW 17th Avenue and NW 71st Street, according to a MDSO critical incident video.
The driver was 23-year-old William Paulemon, who didn’t stop, according to the video. A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office helicopter unit started tracking his vehicle while detectives followed on the road.
Paulemon ran a red light at NW 17th Avenue and NW 87th Street and crashed into a bystander’s vehicle, according to the video. Aerial footage appears to show him causing a T-bone crash with another car in the intersection and spinning out of control.
Detectives then pulled up near Paulemon’s car, the video shows. Paulemon allegedly got out of the car while armed with a handgun. A detective, who was not identified by authorities, discharged his gun while still inside his unmarked sheriff’s vehicle.
Body camera footage shows Paulemon lying on the ground. He fell to the street with his firearm within reach, according to the video.
“Don’t f---ing move,” the detective says, according to the footage. “Don’t f---ing move. I’m gonna shoot you again. Don’t f---ing shoot.”
Paulemon, who had gunshot wounds to his lower extremities, was taken into custody, according to the video. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took him to an area hospital in stable condition. Detectives said they recovered two firearms — one was in his hand and the other in his waistband.
No deputies were injured. The woman who Paulemon crashed into was not injured either.
Paulemon is facing several charges, including attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and fleeing or attempting to elude an officer. His public defender, Erica Lundblad, didn’t immediately respond Monday to a request for comment.
“While a thorough investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still underway, releasing this footage ensures everyone sees the sequence of events as they unfolded,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement. “Regardless of the outcome, my commitment is clear, to be transparent with our community, to hold ourselves to the highest standards and to continue working every day to earn and maintain your trust.”
